Facebook To Integrate Instagram, Messenger And WhatsApp

Use your facebook account to contact a Whatsapp user?

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerbergs' personal project is to integrate these social media apps by integrating the back-end of its three major platforms by the end of the year or by 2020.

When Zuckerberg acquired Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014, he stressed that the two services will remain independent of their parent company.

WhatsApp has also supported end-to-end encryption by default since 2016, and has on several occasions debated with government officials for access to its customers' messages. While facebook messenger also has an encryption that takes the form of 'secret messaging' and has to be enabled per conversation, while instagram does not offer end-to end encryption. This rewrite will, according to one report, enable end-to-end encryption across all platforms.

This decision comes after repeated investigations and criticism on Facebook over the way it has handled and safeguarded user data.

This raises alarms for user privacy and for those who prefer to keep their apps compartmentalised and also among privacy researchers and antitrust experts.

A professor from John Hopkins University said: "Now is a great time to start moving your important conversations off these services."

Both WhatsApp CEO, Jan Koum and Instagram founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger have reportedly left in the recent months due to disputes with Zuckerberg. Disputes caused by an "internal strife" based on the plan to connect the messaging systems. Jan Koum left in April, while Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger left in September last year.

"We are working on making more of our messaging products end-to-end encrypted and considering ways to make it easier to reach friends and family across networks" Says facebook to the Times reporters.

According to Times, Facebook plans on being more effective to compete against Apple's iMessage and Google's Rich communication Services (RCS) to become the go-to messaging app.

Forming this trinity marks a significant change at Facebooks, as before now, Instagram and WhatsApp have acted as two separate entities.
